PowerSeraya, the second-largest generation company here, is fast growing into a full fledged integrated energy provider offering multiple commodities including steam, water, oil and gas. Moving from its core commodity business centered on electricity, it has also expanded into physical oil trading with the setting up of PetroSeraya, which plays a key role in managing PowerSeraya's fuel purchases and risk, as well as optimising its fuel-related assets such as tanks and jetties.
The company has also invested in an 800-megawatt natural gas-fired co-generation plant that utilizes state-of-the-art technology to produce electricity and steam simultaneously. Slated to be completed by 2010, the new Co-Gen facility is designed for increased thermal efficiency and will bring about greater environmental benefits by reducing the company’s overall carbon emissions by a further 10 per cent.
In another project that is in line with its new operation direction, PowerSeraya launched its 10,000 m3/day Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plant on Jurong Island, propelling the company to become the first Combined Heat, Water and Power player in Southeast Asia. The new plant is the world’s first to use the cutting-edge 16 inch membrane, resulting in a higher water yield as well as cost savings. Apart from achieving self-sufficiency in its water and steam needs, the desalination plant also allows PowerSeraya to sell steam to other companies. These initiatives significantly contribute to a growing energy industry in Singapore that is built on sustainability and diversification.
